Pros + Cons

We have Rattan and wicker patio furniture sets in our own gardens next to our beautiful garden pots. We find these have been very durable and have stood the test of time in our Scottish winters over the last 5 - 7 years that we have had it sitting out!

We have included other options and info below in this blog as it depends on various factors, including your budget, climate, aesthetic preferences, and maintenance considerations. Here are some common materials used for patio furniture, along with their pros and cons:

  1. Wicker/Rattan:

    • Pros: Wicker or rattan furniture is lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable. It works well in both traditional and modern settings. Synthetic wicker is weather-resistant and requires minimal maintenance.
    • Cons: Natural wicker can deteriorate in harsh weather, so it's best for covered patios or with the use of protective covers.

  1. Plastic/Resin:

    • Pros: Plastic or resin furniture is lightweight, affordable, and resistant to moisture, rot, and fading. It's easy to clean and doesn't require much maintenance.
    • Cons: Lower-quality plastic may fade or become brittle over time. It may not have the same aesthetic appeal as other materials.
  2. Concrete/Cement:

    • Pros: Concrete patio furniture is durable, heavy, and can be customized in various shapes and colors. It's low maintenance and can withstand harsh weather.
    • Cons: Concrete furniture can be heavy and less comfortable without cushions. It's also less common and may not suit all design preferences.
  3. Fabric/Cushions:

    • Pros: Cushions and fabric on patio furniture provide comfort and style. They can be used with various frame materials.
    • Cons: Outdoor fabrics require special care to prevent mold, fading, and mildew. They may need to be stored during wet or cold seasons.
  4. Composite Materials:

    • Pros: Composite materials, such as HDPE (high-density polyethylene), combine the benefits of various materials. They are durable, low maintenance, and resistant to the elements.
    • Cons: High-quality composite furniture can be expensive compared to some other options.

Ultimately, the best material for your patio furniture depends on your specific needs and preferences. Consider factors like your climate, budget, desired aesthetics, and how much time you're willing to invest in maintenance when making your choice. It's also a good idea to test the comfort and style of different materials in person if possible before making a decision.
